"Morel Joes"
An empty stomach, my wife out for the day and a quart of dehydrated morels. I ask you, " What else can I do?" Yes, I have to make, in my mind the world famous,"MOREL JOES" .
1 pound of fresh hamburger, browned
add a small amount of diced onion
1 quart of dehydrated morels, broken up / rehydrated / sauteed in real butter with a little salt, pepper and sifted flour added.
combine morels with the hamburger, add one can of cream of mushroom soup let it simmer to the desired thickness.
I like to put it in a bowl, place it in the refrigerator and let it sit over night to let the morel flavor take over, BUT I usually can't wait and seem to eat a couple of sandwiches first.
It is better after it is left to sit overnight though.
A painting that shows the associations of nature in the spring, from the four warblers, the deer looking on and the tasty morels in the foreground. I really enjoyed painting this and when I set up at the Mansfield Indiana fest a few years ago it seemed to be a painting that got a lot of attention.
I know it is autumn and the Hen of woods are starting to show up, I still yearn for the morels in spring.
Maybe I should create a hen of the woods painting?

"Morning Call"
Each week since early May I have been posting one of my morel paintings on the MorelHunters.com site. I really enjoy their site.
This week Monday I posted the painting called "MORNING CALL"
On many mornings when hunting morels I have heard the grouse send his message across the landscape. Along with the deer by the creek, the old covered bridge and of course the morels it makes for a fantastic way to start the day.
If you are interested in a print of this painting you can go to my online store by visiting the

I spent the last 8 days looking for morels in the northern Michigan woodlands. Although it wasn't the most successful excursion of gathering those tasty morsels, I still consider the days well spent. In addition to the morels, I was able to work on 2 new paintings.
I ended up with around 350 morels, was hoping for 1000, but I still had a great time hiking and hunting through the woods. There were elk behind my camp, seen several deer, had another porcupine encounter, listened to the owl conversations and enjoyed the coyote concerts at night.

Thank you for your interest and thanks for all the responses on Facebook
I have been amazed at how many posts I see on facebook that have photos of morels and morel hunting adventures. It is great to see such interest in such a fantastic spring activity and if you preserve them it is a tasteful adventure all year long. This is my first post on this new blog and I hope to be adding many more posts as the season comes around.
